This section provides information about the Ministry’s demonstration project on primary/secondary mental health integration.

Overview

This project has been established to support implementation of the Government's Better, Sooner, More Convenient health policy.  For more information about Better, Sooner, More Convenient, please go to this link:

Several demonstration sites have been agreed from across the the nine Better, Sooner, More Convenient business case groups.

A Ministry project team is working with the mental health and addictions implementation teams in each of the demonstration sites to support implementation of their primary/secondary mental health and addictions integration initiatives and to facilitate the sharing of their experience with the sector.

Demonstration areas

There are three areas of demonstration:

  1. e-notes sharing
  2. specialist telephone advice to GPs
  3. more comprehensive primary/secondary integration

Demonstration sites

Current demonstration sites include:

  • Wairarapa and West Coast - for all three demonstration areas
  • Midlands and Canterbury - for specialist telephone advice to GPs
  • Alliance Health Plus (AH+) - for electronic notes sharing

Project team

The primary/secondary integration project is supported by a small team. The team is lead by Liz Parker, Senior Project Manager for primary mental health at the Ministry.

In addition to internal Ministry staff, the project team is supported by two independent clinical advisors:

  • Dr Barry Gribben, is a general practioner with experience implementing the national depression guidelines, and who has an interest in information systems.
  • Dr Clive Bensemann, has been a general practitioner and is currently Clinical Director, Mental Health and Addictions, and Director for Area Mental Health Services, for Auckland DHB.  ADHB has generously made time available for Dr Bensemann to be part of the project team, in recognition of the project's value to sector development.
